Today was a great day at the NZNMEA Middle School Choir Festival. The 70 students that attended from Carson Middle School where great as they performed 2-3 selections for two local High School Teachers. I always tell the students that I expect them to get "Excellent" scores, the scoring system is Fair, Good, Excellent, and Superior ratings. This year they met that and went above. The combined girls choir received "Excellent" ratings (II,II) from the judges. with comments about nice dynamics, energy and facial expressions. The Mixed Choir received "Superior" ratings (I,I-) for the second year in a row. They had both directors up on their feet coming to talk to them thanking them for a great performance and complementing them for technique and expression in their singing. I could not be more proud of these students and what they have accomplished this year. BRAVO!
Next week we will be off to All State Choir for 6 of our singers for a week of great singers from around Nevada. I can't wait for our spring concert for you to hear the great voices!
Another concert in the books!
Thank you all for a great group of concerts! In one week some of you performed 3 times, thank you for giving it your all! As the semester comes to an end I want to remind you that friday 12/14 is the last day for late work including concert make ups.
Choir students have jumped right in and are starting to learn Choir Pa Looza music. We are excited for you to hear this fun music in March! When we get back from break we will start music for Choir Festival, which is in Fallon in March. If anyone is interested in joining us on March 29th as a chaperone please let me know! We will then perform for all of you in our Spring Concert. This concert is scheduled for may 14th but I will finalize that date once SBAC testing dates are released.
Musical Theatre students are learning about scripts and reading a musical at the moment. They will then get to watch the show to see how the script is transformed onto the stage. This next semester Advanced and Intermediate Musical theatre students will be putting on a full one act show that will run for two nights in May. Please come out and support the program and see a great show. Beginning classes will be working on a Monologue project while we discuss character traits and presenting solo performances. They will also be preparing music for the spring concert which is scheduled for May 16th at the moment. As soon as SBAC testing dates are announced I will finalize that date with all of you.
This next semester we also have a great opportunity to go see the Carson High Schools spring musical! This year their students will be performing "The Addams Family" and have invited us to come see a day time performance in April. This will be a reward trip for students, and my encouragement to keep their grades up in the upcoming semester. Students with "D's or F's"and/or 1's will not be allowed to go on the trip. It is a great show and I am excited that we get this opportunity to see it! I will be sending out info about it when we get closer and will also be looking for some parent chaperones to join us.
Thank you all for your hard work this semester as you can see we have a great rest of the year planned and I am excited to get started. But first please enjoy your break and rest up!

The Children's museum also has events with the arts in mind sometimes too!
We will see you all in August!
First I would like to say thank you for a fantastic year of CMS music! This year we had more students in the program then any other year! You all worked hard and it showed at concerts and in the pride you show for this program. We are losing over 50 8th graders this year. The end of the year is always hard for our 8th graders. You all have put in so much time and work into the Choir and Musical Theater program this year. You should be so proud, I know I am! We had lots of firsts this year: first musical, first year with intermediate musical theater, first year with 3 choir classes and the highest scores at festival so far. I wish you all the best next year at the High School. I know not all of you are continuing in music, that's ok. I hope you enjoyed your time at CMS and I hope you take a little appreciation for music and theater. I hope you come back and visit us at concerts and events. Be proud of the work you have done at CMS and continue to do well at CHS! I cant wait to see what the class of 2021 will accomplish!
Congragulations to both Choir and Musical Theatre for putting on a great concert!
Well if we sold tickets I would say that the concert was a sold out house!
With well over 300 people at the concert Musical Theater put on a great show! I am so proud that you all sang out and proved that you could perform your selected shows. Yes there where some mistakes but all shows have them. I am proud of every one of you for keeping going and not stopping in the middle of the song.
Here are some photos from the concert!
I think that was our best concert yet! Thank you all for a fantastic Winter Concert. You all sang beautifully and I heard great things.
I want to give a huge shout out to Miss Sue for coming and accompanying the concert. Not only is she a great pianist and keeps us all together she also helped make the concert more enjoyable because we could hear the singers.
Another shout out to our CMS Honor Band students. We enjoyed performing with you for the first time in 5 years. Please join us at the Band Concert Dec. 19th to see the full Advanced Band perform it.
Here are some Photos from the concert:
So now what?
the question of the hour....
we have about two weeks of school left before winter break and the question is always what are we going to do now. Musical Theater classes are going to be reading a musical and watching it in class. Beginning classes will be reading "Into the Woods", Intermediate will be reading "Guys and Dolls" and Advanced will be reading the musical they will put on in the spring "A Rockin tale of Snow White". Choir classes will be starting to learn music for Choir Pa Looza which will be March 15th at the High School.
We need to move our Spring concerts do to testing.
Our spring concerts will now be:
Choir: Tuesday May 8th @ 7PM
Musical Theatre: Thursday May 10th @ 7PM
November is a time to reflect on what we are thankful for....
Everyday I am thankful that I get to teach amazing students who want to be in my class everyday! The Concert season is upon us and we have started on a great foot!
2017 Veterans Concert
Quoting one of the 8th grade Advanced Mixed Choir students "That was the best concert I have ever done with you Mrs Valley." I completely agree! This years concert was one for the books. Students sang to a full Cafeteria of veterans and students. I was proud of the students poise and professionalism when they where singing and watching the show. Thank you for a great performance! All of the remarks I heard where great!
Congratulations to the 14 Honor Choir students from CMS! I know you will all do a great job representing CMS at the NZNMEA Honor Choir in February!

Hello and welcome to the vocal program at Carson Middle School! I am Briana Valley and I am the teacher and director of Choir and Musical Theatre programs at CMS. I am very excited for our year and all the great music we are going to make together. My goal is to try to update this blog throughout the year to inform all of you about upcoming events and things that happened throughout the year!
All Classes have been working hard starting to learn music and choreography for the upcoming year. Some things to be aware of:
~ Choir and Musical Theatre Shirts!
This year I am excited that we are again ordering CMS Choir shirts! Not only is this a great way for students to remember their time in CMS Choir and to represent the program but we will also be able to wear them at day performances and school spirit dress down days (every Friday) at school. Shirts will only cost $10.00 per shirt and that includes printing and processing fees. Remember, no student will not be included because of financial problems, please let Ms. Valley know if you need some help purchasing your shirt.
~ Honor Choir (open to all students in a choir class)
NZNMEA Honor Choir Audition material was handed out in class and is on the website under “Good to know”. I wanted to explain the process for any parents that might want to know. Students submit to audition for honor choir and receive a random number (ex. Soprano 57). After rehearsing in class for a couple months they will set up a time with me either before school, after school, or at either lunch to record their audition.
When they come in they will sing their Major Scale, Major and Minor Triad, Perfect 4th/ Minor 7th / tritone intervals. They will then sing a song selection presented from the zone.
Once all of the auditions are recorded they are sent to the zone for judging. The judging is a blind audition so directors listening to a section of auditions do not know what student or what school the singer is from. After scores are tallied the top number of singers, number varies depending on the year, to be in the choir.
** If your singer is picked for honor choir they will get to sing with 100 other singers from all over northern Nevada under the guest conductor Anthony Turner. Mr. Turner is a retired High School music teacher whose groups won many awards at festivals and adjudications. We are excited to have him with us! Dates for Honor Choir this year is February 8th and 9th. Rehearsals will be all day on the 8th and 9th in Fallon and we will have a concert on Friday the 9th to conclude the experience for the students.
Please encourage your singer to try and audition this year for Honor Choir!
Our 5 musical theatre classes at CMS are starting to learn their music and have already finished at least one song of choreography. Students are working on flexibility and learning proper turning technique in class. Students are working hard and are excited for the year as am I.
I am sorry for such a long post at the beginning of the year! I look forward to getting to know all of the talented performers and singers this year! Please feel free to message me with questions that you might have throughout the year!
Students are starting to choose classes for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. I cant believe that we are already talking about next years school year! With 6 weeks left in our currant school year students are excited to start their new year!
I am excited to announce that next year we are going to block schedule! I know some people might not like block schedule but for an activity class such and Musical Theatre and Choir, its great! With longer classes we will be able to go more in depth in music theory and learn about composers. I am also excited that with block schedule students get up to 4 electives! This is great for our 7th graders who have to take health and computers. In years past students often had to give up music classes because they didn't have enough elective spots in their schedule, now they will be able to continue their music classes as well.
Both choir classes went to the NZNMEA Middle School Choir Festival at Silverland Middle School in Fernley. Students did a great job and I was very proud of their performance as well as their behavior. Both groups received excellent ratings from the judges.
Musical Theatre classes are done learning choreography for their concerts and we are now cleaning them up. Solo auditions will be held this week and we will be ready for concerts!
This year we are having our concerts the week after testing. Musical Theatre the 9th and Choir the 11th. This makes practicing difficult so I ask that all students be dancing and singing during their time off from testing.
